In a few minutes we are leaving to take Sadie and Max to their spring comprehensive examination where they will get a thorough check up and any necessary vaccinations and I will get a lecture from the vet. It won’t happen until this afternoon at pick up time but I’m already dreading it. You see, my children are fat. Yes, that’s right, my doggie kids are FAT!
I’ve tried to encourage Ken to feed them less and give them less treats, I’ve asked my sister to give them attention and love when she arrives and not a treat. Of course neither of them listen to me. Believe it or not, I very rarely give them treats. I understand what it’s like to carry too much weight. I don’t want to put any unnecessary stress on their joints or age them before their time. They don’t love me any less for not giving them treats. They love the attention I give them just as much.
On their last visit the vet told me to watch their weight. I came home and shared the news and of course I was ignored. Now I have to face the vet again and hear the lecture again, if there is any good news about Ken being laid off once again it’s that he gets to go to the vet with me to hear it first hand.
Last night Sadie weighed in at 59 pounds, she should weigh about 52 pounds. Max weighed in at 50 pounds, he should weigh about 45 pounds. I've seen previews for that show on TLC, Honey We're Killing The Kids, well I'm thinking we need our own reality series with me and the dogs on a diet with skinny Ken trying to tell us what to eat and what to do and the dog or human who goes the longest without biting him in the butt wins the prize! No? I wouldn't watch that either.
In other news, an email arrived this morning informing me that there is good news, my lucky email has won the sum of $420,000.00 in the South African National Lottery…I can’t tell you what the rest of the email said, I deleted it without opening it and with it went my lucky South African Lottery win, DARN!!. Do people actually fall for this scam?
I think I need a cuppa coffee or seven to face this day. Wish me luck!
I read somewhere that there is a link between people who are overweight and their pets being overweight. I guess that makes sense on some level, doesn't it, although it sounds like this theory doesn’t work for you and Ken. Our dog is lean, but our two cats are pudgy.
ReplyDeleteGood luck at the vet, and Happy Friday, sweetie!
PS - If you have a chance, head to my blog and cast your vote this week...
Get a cat! My cat lost weight when I brought home Nora! He keeps her slim too!
ReplyDeleteRunningNan is right! Cats are great exercise for woofies! We reccomend getting two!! Thundering herd of elephants on the stairs is the best game ever!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, it is a good idea for the food scoop you use to be a measuring scoop so that you don't have to guess. Mommy uses a 3/4 cup for Kesey (she was using a cup, but he was getting to be a chubby woofie), and she uses a 1/2 cup for both of us kitties together. Vincent, the cat who came before, peaked at 28 lbs., was free fed, and had no woofie to play with, so she is very careful with the three of us.
Also, if they like them, baby carrots make excellent treats. Kesey does not like carrots, so Mommy gets him treats meant for smaller dogs so the portions are less (which works if they don't give more treats to compensate).
I think if Max had a cat to chase around all day he would be a lot slimmer but I couldn't be that cruel to a cat.
ReplyDeleteWe just got back from dropping them off...I was in tears by the time we left. They cried so much, it was really BAD!!
I guess I got lucky with a dog that has that girlish figure! Little snot has that hour glass... I actually wanted to yell at someone for calling my dog skinny... At least someone in my family got a fast metabolism! ha ha ha
ReplyDeleteGood Luck with the vet but at least you wont be the only one hearing it, hubby will too and then you can tell him See I Told You So, Ha. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteDiana what did that mean old vet say to you to put you in tears.
ReplyDeleteYou have stsrtd walking with them and that will help. My dog has to lose a pound too (he only weighs 10, so that pound is 10% of his weight)
Some cats like to be chased. I actually run up to Kesey, meow at him, and take off again with him chasing me. It's fun! -Riley
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with being chased, but what kitty in their right mind would actually ask to be chased? Kesey does chase me, but if Riley chases me too much and I hiss, Kesey will rescue me by poking Riley with his nose. Heh! -Tiki
I am 11 & chasing kitties is the best thing ever! -Kesey
OHHHHHH MY GOSH I CAN SO RELATE...Bazzie lost 10 pounds when we got Cookie she keeps him in shape.. Cookie is barrel chested or built like a buffalo as steve says... so she tends to look .. uhmmmm fluffy.. she is about 45 pounds she probably could lose 5 pounds.. so I dont give her many treats nor do I over feed her.. but guess who doe Steve gives her stuff all the time..and now she has gotten to where she does not like dog food.. but if i put warm water in it and stir it up she will eat it.. sigh.. our 4 leggers..
ReplyDeletei got that SAME email today! how funny!
ReplyDeletethe sad thing is, i used to work at the new mexico lottery, and we used to get calls from people all the time who actually do fall for the scam. i talked to a lady once who had her bank account completely emptied because of a scam like that. so sad.
my dog is about 3 pounds overweight, i think, and she's going to the vet tomorrow. i'll probably be in the same predicament as you!
You can of course only win the lottery if you've purchased a ticket! And only if you're very lucky, although my brother-in-law knows someone who's won it twice! I get these e-mails telling me that I've won the UK lottery! There are so many spelling mistakes and they can't even put together a proper form that one's supposed to fill in. I can't believe people still fall for that...
ReplyDeleteI always kept my dog pretty lean. I figured I had no choice, since with her severe dysplasia extra weight would severely limit her ability to run and play.
ReplyDeleteWhen she was old and no longer played much, the poor dog developed an environmental allergy (to my townhouse) and as a result lost tons of weight and scratched off all of her fur down the the bare skin. She went to live with my mother, who fed her an egg every morning, a baked yam every evening, and of course treats. (And she fretted because the dog wouldn't eat dog food as well.)
When I got her back ,the dog gained a lot of weight, but she also developed thick glossy fur and is so much happier than she was before, I don't have the heart to put her on a severe diet. She's so happy!
The moral of the story was yes, they should be thin but maybe being a little overweight can mean a happy dog.
I think Alfie could lose a couple of pounds but I am being honest when I say he doesn’t overeat. He does tend to skive my food and how can mummy resist those big brown eyes!
ReplyDeleteThe other pooch Oscar, is overweight and could do with losing around 10lbs, I worry for him since he’s going to be 9 this year and has already had to major ops. I blame my father for over feeding him, he never listens!
